UGP 36: HOWARD vs AZEVEDO

[The arena is littered with a fervent crowd that grows more impatient by the second for impending chaos. Red spotlights scan all through the building while laser lights and a brilliant white strobe light flutters on the main entrance stage.]
[The air, which hours ago was cool and fresh, now reeks with the toxic aroma of alcohol and that sweet leaf. The pyrotechnic explosives drown out the sounds of cheers from the crowd with each detonation, havoc has descended upon these grounds.]
[The stage of a bloody war is set. The conquerors envision nothing but execution towards success, while the meek is flooded with doubt. Down in the trenches, we are greeted with Bodie Sullivan and Jason Jackson, ready for their cue.]

BODIE SULLIVAN: “Ladies and gentlemen, we are live exclusively on the Battleground Network here at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the octagon is officially open for business for UGP 36! Hello everybody I’m Bodie Sullivan and standing next to me is my main man, the Hall of Fame Legend, Jason Jackson! JJ it’s great to have you back in the booth calling the fights my friend.”
JASON JACKSON: “It’s great to be back, and how about the atmosphere in this place uce? The energy that Brazil brings is just.. Electric. There’s no better word. You know that everyone out here in this crowd tonight are REAL fight fans and have come to see some sheer violence on display tonight. They don’t have long to wait, do thay Bodie-san?”
BODIE SULLIVAN: “They sure don’t big guy. We’ve got another big one in store for you all tonight. Two championships on the line but before we get to those, let’s break down the undercard. To kick things off we have two DRIP alums facing off in the Middleweight Division as Lito Belucci makes his Union GP debut against Noah Vanderkaay. These guys are part of a new wave of next generation fighters who have been picked up in an effort to build depth within the division while adding youth and a lot of intrigue. Belucci and Vanderkaay have found solid success at the regional pro-level and have a golden opportunity tonight to make a statement on a massive stage.”
JASON JACKSON: “Golden opportunity for sure. You are kicking things off guys! This is their time to shine. They set the tone for the rest of the night, and believe me you do NOT want this crowd against you. I hope these two young guns come out here and throw LEATHER. You hear me? Knock down, drag out, make your bones type stuff. I guess we’ll see though. I’m excited to see this new class of fighters trickling in from DRIP… get it?”
BODIE SULLIVAN: “From there we head into the Heavyweight Division and it’s the first scheduled bout since the merger of the Cruiserweight Division. Bobby Barnett makes his Union GP debut, after earning a contract through DRIP, as he takes on Cezar Miklos. Similarly to the 185 pound fight, these guys have a big chance to break through and get an early jump on this newly inflated division. Expect to see fireworks here, folks.”
JASON JACKSON: “I’ve heard some good things about Barnett, but Cezar is a dog. Look, If I could tell you anything Barnett it would be this. You’re fighting on the undercard of a stacked Pay Per View. You’re at a precipice that very few arrive at as a prospect. You can either conquer this mountain and become a name to be talked about or you can fall down and start all over again. This is your shot to REALLY impress. To become a mainstay. This is what folks work so hard for. These undercard opportunities turn into Main Events if you go out there and give it your all. Welcome to the show. That being said? You have a huge test ahead of you because Miklos is going to test your chin. He’s going to bring you into a dog fight and throw you in the deep. This is NOT going to be a warm welcome. I hope you’re up for the task and Cezar? Do work uce.”
BODIE SULLIVAN: “And then we head into the featured undercard bout, a Lightweight contest between another two DRIP alums as Benji Meyers takes on Cameron Moss. This is a classic clash of styles fight — a striker versus grappler, which often produces some highlight reel moments. Whoever walks away from this bout with the dub will surely toss their name in the hat of title contention in a quickly evolving division where the current champion Delaney Donovan sees the happy trails just ahead.”
JASON JACKSON: “DRIP? More like we’ve got a leak! The undercard is filled with these young new upstarts. Prospects looking to make a name for themselves on the biggest card of the summer and to toss yout name in the ring for anything you first have to impress. You have to win. Benji and Cameron are both hungry for that opportunity and I think they will be bringing their A game tonight. I’m partial to leaning toward the striker in these matchups, but I am a little biased. Haha. Good luck to both sides though, this should be a fun one.”
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Then we slide into the championship block of the night. First up, in the Co-Main Event, Travis Decker puts his Middleweight Championship on the line as he takes on Aries Reed. Both of these fighters are highly respected veterans of the game who have been pioneers to this company, and we can expect this rematch to be miles apart from their first encounter at Boss Fight XV back in November of 2019.”
JASON JACKSON: “Aries Reed is not fighting the same Travis Decker he fought previously. This man is a new animal. I expect this one to be a heavy hitter. Both men have fight stopping power. Aries is a brawler while Decker likes to keep his range and use those devastating kicks to pick his opponent apart. This is my pick for fight of the night.”
BODIE SULLIVAN: “And finally the Main Event of the evening is for the Bantamweight Crown as the Champion Gianna Howard looks to make her second successful title defense against the Brazilian bred Isabel Azevedo. Two young blazing stars in the making square up to showcase their skills. Can Gianna’s terrifying striking overcome Izzy’s suffocating grappling? It’s the million dollar question we will find out later tonight.”
JASON JACKSON: “The haunting of Rio De Janeiro, ladies and gentlemen. The GHOST is in the building and she has a tough task ahead of her tonight in Izzy Azevedo. I’m super excited for this one. Dat Buggah’s cherry, boys. You want to talk about striker vs grappler? This is the one. This matchup here.. I don’t know uce. I may have to change my mind on fight of the night. No disrespect to Izzy, but I gotta go with my girl Gianna on this one. I think she finishes this fight in highlight reel ghost vision fashion. Big kine.”
BODIE SULLIVAN: “And with that folks, we are all set to toss it over to the mouthpiece of MMA, Mike Dempsey. It’s Bout Time! Mikey, take it away brother!”

MIKE DEMPSEY: “Ladies and gentlemen, we are live exclusively on the Battleground Network here at the sold out Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for UGP 36! And now, this opening contest is scheduled for three rounds in the Union Grand Prix Middleweight Division! Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner, a Boxer holding a perfect professional mixed martial arts record of seven wins, zero losses. He stands 6’2”, and weighing in at 185 pounds. He is from Minneapolis, Minnesota, fighting out of Twin Cities MMA, presenting the number nine ranked Middleweight Contender in the World, Noah “The Mauler” Vanderkaay!
[Noah Vanderkaay doesn’t look concerned about anything his opponent brings to the table. He bounces in place, rolling his neck and shoulders, looking ready as ever.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “First up on the docket tonight is the Twin Cities prospect, Noah Vanderkaay. When Noah was brought into DRIP for a tryout, we knew he had a lot of potential. His mindset is that of a ferocious wild animal, ready to pounce and destroy. Although he doesn’t necessarily possess that one punch knockout power, he has incredible stamina that really wears a fighter down and becomes easy prey for The Mauler.”
JASON JACKSON: “The mauler is a good name for him, huh? From what I hear he’s like a wolverine or a honey badger or something. Vicious and malicious. You don’t have to have knockout power to finish a fight. It helps, dont get me wrong, but if you swarm a guy and he can’t respond, that’s a win too. I’m looking forward to seeing this kid work.”
MIKE DEMPSEY: “And his opponent, fighting out of the red corner, a Kickboxer holding a professional mixed martial arts record of nine wins, two losses. He stands 6’3”, and weighing in at 185 pounds. He is from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, presenting the number five ranked Middleweight Contender in the World, “The Score” Lito Belucci!”
[Lito Belucci is calm in his corner. He looks confident in himself as he sways from side to side in his corner with very little emotion.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Two strikers coming from different backgrounds with vastly different approaches. Belucci is a high motor kickboxer who’s not afraid to stand and trade with anyone. He’s tough, resilient, and has cardio for days. However, we’ve seen Vanderkaay on the big stage and the guy is a savage. He’s not afraid to fight on the feet or drag it to the mat. I think Belucci’s key to victory here is to fight on the perimeter, keep the distance and set up traps for Vanderkaay to walk blindly into.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah, gotta keep range, and control the pace. Belucci needs to dictate the temp and not let Vanderkaay overwhelm him. That’s going to be the key to victory here. Use that aggression against him. Counters, check hooks, leg and push kicks. All of these are tools in his arsenal that he can use to keep Vanderkaay at bay. Can he execute though? We are about to find out.”

[Things get off the rails right out of the gate, as after touching gloves, Noah Vanderkaay unleashes a thunderous combination that culminates in a hook that sends Belucci stumbling back with his corner screaming at their fighters and the fans losing their minds. Vanderkaay moves forward and continues his assault with Lito Belucci scurrying away with a bruise on his cheek. A roundhouse punch by Vanderkaay almost knocked Belucci’s head off, but quick reflexes and his survival instincts saved him and allowed him some space to try and mount some offense early on.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “The Mauler gonna maul, JJ! Coming in hot with some big shots, that’ll definitely get your attention.”
JASON JACKSON: “He’s not keeping that range. Belucci is letting him come right in and Vanderkaay shows NO respect for his hands. He’s just walking him down.”
[A series of low kicks slow Vanderkaay’s momentum up and allow the fight’s pace to level back down, something that Belucci utilizes to try and get the fight into his game-plan. A one-two-three-FOUR combo by Vanderkaay with the jabs getting blocked but the hook hits hard on Belucci’s face sending the Myrtle Beach native to the mat with a small laceration on his cheek. Yet, as if by sheer reflexes or instincts, Belucci puts his hands back and sprints back to his feet avoiding any damage on the ground.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “You’d think those stinging leg kicks would slow Vanderkaay down some, but he’s just walking right through the fire to get his shots in.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah, he’s like a honey badger on bath salts. He is just all forward momentum. Relentless.”
[Vanderkaay stalks Belucci, who unleashes a Spinning Back Kick! Vanderkaay wasn’t expecting the move and it sends The Mauler against the fence! The crowd gets back on their feet, Belucci uses the range and launches a fast low kick that pops on impact! Vanderkaay recovers and swings wildly as if by miracle, landing some punches that make Belucci stand back allowing Vanderkaay some time to recover… but not enough as Belucci doesn’t want to lose any momentum and lands another low kick that lands hard on Vanderkaay’s right leg. Belucci tries to cut the distance with the jab, but Vanderkaay moves backward and sideways evading most of the punches.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Un…be…lievable! Noah Vanderkaay eats a monstrous spinning back kick and somehow he’s still standing. That’s a big momentum swing in favor of Belucci.”
JASON JACKSON: “It looked like it glanced off the top of his head. It hurt him pretty bad but it wasn’t enough to get the finish. I like how Belucci is keeping the heat on him though. Not letting him recover.”
[Taking the center of the cage, Vanderkaay answers The Score’s offense with some solid jabs and moves away, looking to cool down the fight, regroup and control the pace. A series of short punches tests the distance between the fighters; until Belucci replies with a solid cross to the head just as Vanderkaay unleashes a hook to Belucci’s ribs. Then another hook to Belucci’s ribs and Vanderkaay smells blood in the water as he continues punishing Belucci’s ribs. Belucci tries to fend his opponent off with a one-two combo that gets blocked; but the uppercut wasn’t! Vanderkaay isn’t fazed though, as he launches a low kick of his own that lands hard on Belucci’s left leg! A crisp overhand right from Vanderkaay followed by a left hook takes Belucci to the ground as the round comes to a close.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Fistic fireworks to close out the first round! Both fighters finish strong, but Vanderkaay scores the knockdown right there at the end and that may be just enough to tilt the scorecards in his favor.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah, I gotta give that round to Noah. Just on the aggression, control, and the knockdown. He’s got a solid ass chin. That kick might’ve put a lot of other folks away. We’re getting ready for round two here though, let’s see how it shakes out.”

[Round two begins and the cut-man on Belucci’s corner has done a stellar job closing the laceration on his cheek. They circle around each other, looking for angles, throwing tentative jabs looking for an opening. The Mauler has found one and again goes for the body landing a couple of hooks on Belucci’s ribs! Those must be adding up as Belucci seems to be losing some speed in his strikes, throwing wildly and mostly hitting air as Vanderkaay continues to maul him with combinations that re-open the small laceration on the cheeks and they’re now starting to swell a bit from the punishment.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Lito Belucci’s cut gets opened back up after getting tagged. I like where Vanderkaay’s head is at right now, targeting the body to take some steam off those blazing kicks.”
JASON JACKSON: “Those body shots are crushing. He might even have a broken rib. That may be what’s slowign him down there. It’s a nice tactic though. Go low, and that opens up the head, and then vice versa. Always leave them guessing. He’s doing a great job of that now.”
[A left hook from Vanderkaay touches the cheeks and Belucci stumbles against the cage, referee Ron Anderson asks Belucci to defend himself as Vanderkaay rains hooks to the ribs! Anderson has seen enough! He jumps between the fighters saving Belucci from taking any more damage!]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “And just like that, Noah Vanderkaay saw a window and then poured it on Lito Belucci and put an end to his night!”
JASON JACKSON: “Told you. You don’t need the power when you can overwhelm a guy like that. Beautiful performance by the mauler!”
[The crowd explodes into cheers while Noah Vanderkaay celebrates by pounding his chest with a clenched fist and mean mugging the nearest cameraman. The Ringside Physicians rush into the octagon and immediately tend to Belucci. After a few moments pass, Lito is able to stand on his own, so the medical team files out of the cage so both fighters can meet back in the center of the octagon for the official call.]
MIKE DEMPSEY: “Ladies and gentlemen, referee Ron Anderson has called for a stop in this fight at one minute sixteen seconds in the second round, declaring your winner by technical knockout, “The Mauler” Noah Vanderkaay!”
[The crowd cheers once again as Vanderkaay has his hand raised in victory. Both fighters shake hands as a gesture of mutual respect before splitting off to their respective crews. A graphic pops up on screen, breaking down the statistics of the fight while the commentators recap.]

BODIE SULLIVAN: “We are back ladies and gentlemen from our break for station identification, be sure to keep up with all of the latest news and highlights with DRIP, aka Dante Reed’s International Promotions, exclusively on the Battleground Network. DRIP went on the road to South Carolina in its latest installment, but for episode five, we return to the newly rebranded BST Center in Chicago! Before we head to our next bout, we gotta shine some light on a MMA pillar here tonight, “The Buzzsaw” Zion Momo’a! JJ, I think you’ll agree with me here that we are all chomping at the bit for Zion’s return to MMA. Although nothing official has been made yet, I’ve been hearing rumblings that we may soon get a release date for the very first Ryūjin FC show. Whether it’s Japan, here in Brazil, or back in the States, I wanna see this man back in action pronto!”
JASON JACKSON: “I’ve been training with him a bit when we run into each other at Hit Squad. He’s good friends with Darius and Roscoe and the crew over there and he spends time at that gym quite a bit. I can’t say much on who he’s fighting, but I can say for sure he’s also chomping at the bit to be back and he’s ready for his return. But no matter where he lands, or who he’s fighting on the re-emergence, he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with.”

MIKE DEMPSEY: “Ladies and gentlemen, the following contest is scheduled for three rounds in the Union Grand Prix Heavyweight Division! Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner, a Kickboxer holding a professional mixed martial arts record of three wins, three losses. He stands 6’3”, and weighing in at 250 pounds. He is from Bucharest, Romania, fighting out of the Paroxysm Gym, presenting the number nine ranked Heavyweight Contender in the World, Cezar “Mâini de Piatră” Miklos!”
[Cezar Miklos is beating himself up in the corner before the fight begins, smacking himself in the face, body and legs to get ready for this fight.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Alright folks, we are set to begin this Heavyweight bout. Up first, Cezar Miklos, aka “Stone Hands”. This fight could be described as a “best of the rest” type of situation, given the Heavyweight Championship Grand Prix announcement earlier in the week. Miklos has proven to be a dangerous striker, particularly with his hands. Although he has seen a lot of peaks and valleys thus far in his professional career, he’s still in the top ten rankings. If he can secure the win tonight, this will definitely help his case in staying in the top ten, despite the added growth of the division due to the absorption of several of the former Cruiserweight fighters.”
JASON JACKSON: “This man has FUCK YOU power in his hands. One clean shot could cut out the lights, and I really hope Barnett is aware of that coming into this one. Miklos is going to stick behind that jab, find his range, and then uncork a bomb. Will it land though? Or will the newcomer Barnett have the answer? Time will tell.”
MIKE DEMPSEY: “And his opponent, fighting out of the red corner, a Boxer holding a professional mixed martial arts record of thirteen wins, eight losses. He stands 6’ even, and weighing in at 258 pounds. He is from Little Rock, Arkansas, presenting the number seven ranked Heavyweight Contender in the World, “Big Bear” Bobby Barnett!”
[Bobby Barnett doesn’t look concerned about anything his opponent brings to the table.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Yet another DRIP alum making his Union GP debut, Bobby Barnett is here to let people know just who he is. Barnett has been a successful fighter in the Arkansas regional scenes, and finally gets the call up to the big league, despite coming up short against Ka’ili Tuiasosopo in the inaugural episode of DRIP. This is his chance to erase those doubts of whether he deserved to get a Union contract, or if he simply oversold himself on the DRIP stage.”
JASON JACKSON: “Put up or shut up time. He has the chance to come in here and silence a lot of nay-sayers and doubters Bodie. Will he though? That’s the question. I don’t know much about this guy, admittedly. I’ve seen a few of his fights on youtube, but that’s about it. He has potential and heart but it’s a whole different beast fighting in Brazil, on a card like this. I hope he is as unflappable as he is portraying on the exterior. That’s all I’m gonna say.”

[Both fighters close the distance to touch gloves and get this fight underway. Miklos strikes first with a furious flurry of punches that quickly puts Barnett in a world of hurt! Barnett stumbles back on his heels, revealing a split lip and he looks to be an easy target for Cezar Miklos.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Cezar Miklos fires out of his corner like a cannon and wrecks Bobby Barnett with some heavy hands! He’s got Barnett hurt early!”
JASON JACKSON: “OOOH SHIT! The Newcomer is in BIG trouble! Miklos keeping the pressure on him..”
[Bobby Barnett is still buzzing from the opening flurry, and eats another series of jabs and crosses from Cezar Miklos. Barnett tries to circle out but Miklos launches a head kick that clips him on the chin. Everyone in the building, including Barnett, did not see that kick coming and left them in shock and awe. Barnett’s legs are giving out and leaving himself wide open. Miklos charges in, connects with a violent cross that leaves Bobby Barnett lying unconscious on the canvas!]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Oooooooh! Cezar Miklos just hit him with a chin spinner and sent him into the shadow realm! What an incredible knockout! I don’t think Miklos even broke a sweat out there!”
JASON JACKSON: “NIGHT NIGHT. CEZAR MILKOS! CEZAR!!! That was NAAAAASTY. Good SHIT big fella.”
[The crowd roars with excitement as Miklos celebrates his emphatic victory. The Ringside Physicians rush into the octagon and immediately tend to Barnett. After a few moments pass, Barnett is able to stand on his own, so the medical team files out of the cage so both fighters can meet back in the center of the octagon for the official call.]
MIKE DEMPSEY: “Ladies and gentlemen, referee Lars Levy has called for a stop in this fight at fifty-two seconds in the very first round, declaring your winner by knockout, Cezar “Mâini de Piatră” Miklos!”
[The crowd cheers once again as Cezar Miklos has his hand raised in victory. Both fighters shake hands as a gesture of mutual respect before splitting off to their respective crews. A graphic pops up on screen, breaking down the statistics of the fight while the commentators recap.]

BODIE SULLIVAN: “Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. Be sure to catch Ryūjin FC coming this summer exclusively on the Battleground Network. Before we return to action, big shout out to the Lightweight Champion Delaney Donovan in the house tonight! One of 2022’s biggest storyline has been Double D’s farewell tour. With just two fights remaining on his contract, he’s vowed to retire afterward. A lot of names have been thrown out there that span a multitude of divisions. I’ve been told that his next fight is in fact in the works. Both parties have verbally agreed in principle, it’s all a matter of dotting i’s and crossing t’s. I cannot wait to see who’s next for the Irish icon.”
JASON JACKSON: “Like you said, he’s got two fights remaining. WHOEVER he fights? It’s going to be huge. Delaney isn’t the type to just coast off into the sunset. He’s going out with a bang and it’s going to be incredible to watch. He is ABSOLUTELY headed for a Hall Of Fame ballot in the future. He definitely has my vote.”

MIKE DEMPSEY: “Ladies and gentlemen, the following contest is scheduled for three rounds in the Union Grand Prix Lightweight Division! Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner, a Wrestler holding a professional mixed martial arts record of eight wins, one loss. He stands 5’10”, and weighing in at 155 pounds. He is from Queens, New York, presenting the number four ranked Lightweight Contender in the World, “Bingo” Cameron Moss!”
[Cameron Moss looks like he has been waiting for this fight forever.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Cameron Moss was part of the very first DRIP episode, and despite a tough debut loss to Lightweight Title Challenger Alistair McKay, he continues to be a bright prospect for the division. He’s an excellent wrestler who’s not afraid to stand and bang, but his specialty is on the ground. If he can drag and pin you down there, he will pummel you to a pulp.”
JASON JACKSON: “Redemption time for this young man! You’re right, he’s pretty well rounded, and a loss to Alistair isn’t really something to balk at. McKay is a killer, and To test yourself against someone of that caliber is respectable. Win or lose. But tonight? He needs a win and standing in his way is Bony Stark!”
MIKE DEMPSEY: “And his opponent, fighting out of the red corner, a Boxer holding a professional mixed martial arts record of ten wins, one loss. He stands 6’1”, and weighing in at 155 pounds. He is from Seattle, Washington, fighting out of Prodigy 206, presenting the number three ranked Lightweight Contender in the World, “Bony Stark” Benji Meyers!”
[Benji Meyers glares at his opponent from the opposite corner.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “The lone teammate of Prodigy 206 in Union, Benji Meyers. The 206 prospects in Everest didn’t fare too well yesterday, but Benji Meyers looks to end the weekend on a high note for the camp. Meyers has a massive frame for 155 pounds. He uses his reach to his advantage in exchanges and keeping distance on most fighters. There’s a lot at stake here for Meyers in this top five matchup, a win here could fast track him right into the title picture.”
JASON JACKSON: “I’d like to see it, honestly. I like this guy. I like his game, the way he carries himself, his gym, his work ethic. I think he has a lot of potential and I think if he shows the same amount of tremendous heart that he has in the past, he may just walk out of here with his hand raised tonight. Guess we are about to see.”

[Benji Meyers and Cameron Moss move forward as the bell signals the beginning of the fight. Without much of a delay, the two exchange wildly. Moss gets a step on Benji, landing a brilliant combination that forces him to back off on his offense and defend himself better. Moss follows Benji as he shifts to the side, but eats a barrage of solid punches. Benji launches a hook to the body but misses wide. Moss looks to counter with a stiff jab but Benji dodges it and the two back off to reset.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Cameron Moss gets the early jump on Benji Meyers with a couple of nice combinations.”
JASON JACKSON: “Some trading shots back and forth here right out the gate. Cameron’s hands are crisp though, eh Bodie?”
[Moss steps back in but Benji catches him with an uppercut to the face that wobbles him a bit. Moss fakes a punch and shoots a takedown. Benji didn’t see it coming and gets slammed to the mat, and the impact looks to have done some damage as Benji holds his side. Moss is in open guard over Benji and looks to improve his position. He postures up and drops the hammer with several clean elbows to the face.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Big takedown from Moss and now he’s battering Meyers with vicious elbows.”
JASON JACKSON: “Power double puts Benji on the mat hard, and it looks like that hurt his ribs. He’s clutching them instead of worrying about defending his face.”
[Benji eventually covers up and blocks the incoming elbows, but this allows Moss to move on the ground and gets to a half guard. This new angle gives Moss the opening to continue the onslaught of elbows, inflicting some major damage. Benji tries to move on the ground and improve his position, but this leaves himself wide open for Moss to crack him with another big elbow that bounces his head off the canvas. Referee Jack Gibbs knows he may be calling off the fight soon as he watches very intently.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Moss is moving seamlessly out there and has got Benji guessing. Jack Gibbs looks like he might call the fight if things don’t improve for Bony Stark.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah, this is ugly. If he doesn’t do something to get out of here soon I’d call it too. That’s too much damage he’s abso– OOH HIS HEAD BOUNCED OFF THE FLOOR!”
[Cameron Moss continues to storm over Benji with big elbows, but somehow Benji manages to gain enough wits to cover up. Meyers then feels enough separation to switch to full guard and then eventually locking his legs together to a closed guard. Moss isn’t relenting though and positions himself for another round of ground and pound to finish the fight. Moss drops more devastating elbows but Benji blocks them with his forearms, so he’s got to reassess the situation. He repositions himself and finds a pinhole opening to slip through a couple sharp elbows. Benji gets rocked and loses his wherewithal, allowing Moss to break the closed guard then work his way up to a side mount.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “It looked like Benji Meyers was starting to gain some control in this fight, but Bingo Moss’ wrestling is proving to be too much right now.”
JASON JACKSON: “He’s diced, smothered, and covered like some Waffle House hashbrowns right now. Moss is all over Bony Stark. He’s giving him no space to counter or even breathe. It’s total domination.”
[The misfortunes continue to come in droves for Benji Meyers, as Moss secures his position and begins dropping some heavy hammer fists and mixing in more elbows. It’s clear Benji needs to do something soon or the referee will stop the fight. Benji keeps getting rocked as he tries to escape, but he ends up giving his back to Moss! Benji tries to turtle up to protect himself, but Moss continues to connect punches to the side of the head. It looks like Benji tries to roll out, but Moss reacts perfectly and slips a leg hook in and keeps working.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Benji Meyers is getting busted up and it’s only getting worse. He’s gotta find a way to get this fight back on the feet.”
JASON JACKSON: “He gave up his back. That is the sign of a defeated man. This is the beginning of the end.”
[A crimson puddle accumulates on the canvas as Benji trickles blood from the considerable wounds to his face. Moss unloads with several elbows again that continue to batter the Seattle prospect and they may finish the fight soon if Benji doesn’t fight back! The referee shouts a warning to Benji to defend himself, as this triggers a reaction from him. Benji tries to spring up, but Moss plants him back down to the mat while getting a second hook in and completely flattening him out. Moss makes a move, looking to sink a rear naked choke and finish this, but Benji hand fights him off and continues to be stuck in survival mode. At this point, Cameron Moss simply goes back to the well and begins dropping an assortment of elbows and punches to Benji Meyers, who looks totally defenseless at this point. Fists and elbows slip through the defense while the referee shouts out another warning to Benji. There’s nothing left for Benji at this point as his head continues to bounce off the canvas. Referee Jack Gibbs has finally seen enough so he peels Cameron Moss off and waves off the fight.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “And this one is all over! Cameron Moss with a dominant first round stoppage to score his first victory in Union GP!”
JASON JACKSON: “He was dribbling his head off the mat like Allen Iverson. That was a good call. I can’t believe he’s even disputing that. Ask him who the fucking president is. Ask him. How many fingers am I holding up? (Jason flips him off) Don’t be a Jackass. You got mopped. Take your L humbly.”
[Benji tries to fumble his way up and dispute the stoppage, but he’s clearly dazed. Cameron Moss scales the fence and celebrates with his cornermen while the Ringside Physicians rush into the octagon and immediately tend to Meyers. After a few moments pass, Benji is able to stand on his own, so the medical team files out of the cage so both fighters can meet back in the center of the octagon for the official call.]
MIKE DEMPSEY: “Ladies and gentlemen, referee Jack Gibbs has called for a stop in this fight at four minutes thirty-eight seconds in the very first round, declaring your winner by technical knockout, “Bingo” Cameron Moss!”
[The crowd cheers once again as Moss has his hand raised in victory. Both fighters shake hands as a gesture of mutual respect before splitting off to their respective crews. A graphic pops up on screen, breaking down the statistics of the fight while the commentators recap.]

BODIE SULLIVAN: “Welcome back from the break folks. Be sure to catch the final regular season card: Everest // Rip City exclusively on the Battleground Network. It’s the final push for a championship playoff berth and although a handful of fighters have been locked in or mathematically eliminated, there are still spots open for some of today’s best prospects to claw their way in. Now, as we prepare ourselves for the Co-Main Event, we have to point out a man in the audience who has A LOT of interest in this next fight. Union GP Hall of Famer Byron McCall is here tonight, intently watching to see who he may very well be facing next.”
JASON JACKSON: “It’s good to see him back, Bodie. I have to tell you though, he looks like he never left. Byron is back with a vengeance and you can bet your ass he’s watching this title fight closely tonight because there’s no double he’s got next. Byron McCall could very well be a champion by the end of 2022. How crazy is that?”

[“Icon” by Jaden Smith begins to play over the loudspeaker and “The Silver Tongued Devil” Aries Reed emerges to the stage wearing his purple and silver walkout fight kit with crew members from his camp following behind. Reed looks hyped up and can seemingly be seen talking trash as he slowly walks toward the cage.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Making his way to the octagon now is a man who has been a staple of the Middleweight Division since nearly the beginning. Aries Reed has always been a top contender, but a championship reign has always slipped through his fingertips. Tonight he’s back for a second chance at glory which brings up a question. If Reed falls short a second time, what’s the future hold? He has two fights remaining on his contract, and if he walks out empty handed tonight, what’s left for him to do? Aries has several other business ventures, so it’s not like he’s in this game for the money. The Silver Tongued Devil is at a crossroads in his career. The future could look vastly different, depending on how tonight unfolds.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah, and he doesn’t really seem to be the same killer he was back in those days. I think getting starched by Zion really did detriment to his confidence. Meanwhile Travis Decker has been on a tear lately, walking through everyone we put in front of him. We could be seeing the end of Aries. I hope not. I hope he comes out here and proves me wrong tonight, but I don’t think so. If he gets beaten tonight, it may be time to consider hanging them up.”
[Once he makes it to cageside, Reed gets checked out by the fight official to ensure he’s fit to fight. Once he’s been cleared, he bear crawls up the steps and stomps into the cage, giving out a loud battle cry before taking his corner.]

I CAN FEEL IT COMING IN THE AIR TONIGHT, (OH LORD)

CAN YOU FEEL IT COMING IN THE AIR TONIGHT, OH LORD, (OH LORD)
♫
[The crowd erupts again as “In the Air Tonight” By Phil Collins begins to play throughout the arena, and Travis Decker steps out of the tunnel, the spotlight gleaming off the Middleweight Title around his waist. He looks ready for war as he marches toward the cage with his team. He doesn’t acknowledge the fans, or anyone else, except for his opponent, which his eyes are glued on the entire time.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Always stoic in his approach, Travis Decker looks to make a Middleweight record-tying fourth title defense tonight. We continue to hammer that Decker has been a totally different beast as of late, and really you could probably pinpoint the turnaround after his first encounter with Reed. When Decker lost to Reed via a second round TKO, he dropped to 4-4-0 and did some serious soul-searching. Since then, he’s gone 6-1 and has three title defenses under his belt. With Decker riding a wave of momentum with a six fight win streak, he continues to show us the transformation of his game never ends.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah, he went from a mediocre midcarder to the king of the Middleweights almost overnight. I keep saying I think Momo’a awoke a beast in him as well with their rivalry. Either way, here he is now and he’s not looking to let go of that title ANY time soon as he looks to make history here tonight. Aries really has to watch for those lazer accurate kicks front he outside, close the distance, and fight this man in a phonebooth. That is the only way he wins tonight.”
[Decker makes it to cageside where he strips down to his trunks and gives each of his cornermen one last hug before turning to the official. Once he gets inspected and cleared, Decker looks up and points to the heavens before racing up the steps. One of his coaches pours some water on the mat as he settles in his corner to wipe his feet and gain a little added grip. Decker remains dialed in as he awaits the official introductions.]
MIKE DEMPSEY: “Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time for the Main Event of the evening! Sanctioned by the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission, our three judges scoring this contest at cageside are Edson Vila, Miguel Reis, and Davi Justo, and when the action begins, our referee in charge in the octagon is Colin Davenport… AND NOW! The following contest is scheduled for five rounds and it is for the Union Grand Prix Middleweight Championship! Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner, a Boxer holding a professional mixed martial arts record of nineteen wins, nine losses. He stands 6’ even, and weighing in at 185 pounds. He is from Atlanta, Georgia, fighting out of the Lion’s Den FC – Las Vegas, presenting the former Middleweight Title Challenger and number one ranked Middleweight Contender in the World, “The Silver Tongued Devil” Aries Reed!”
[Aries Reed doesn’t look concerned about anything his opponent brings to the table.]
MIKE DEMPSEY: “And his opponent, fighting out of the red corner, a Kickboxer holding a professional mixed martial arts record of ten wins, five losses. He stands 6’2”, and weighing in at 185 pounds. He is from Chicago, Illinois, fighting out of Real Killas MMA, presenting the reigning, defending, undisputed Union Grand Prix Middleweight Champion of the World, “Ripcord” Travis Decker!”
[Travis Decker is calm in his corner. He looks convinced of his abilities..]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “We are all set and ready to go for this Middleweight Championship bout. With a possible twenty-five minutes, anything can happen. Can’t wait, JJ! Can’t wait!”
JASON JACKSON: “Let’s get to it.”
[The referee steps to the center of the cage and motions for both fighters to meet. With the announcer standing behind, holding the microphone, referee Colin Davenport gives one final pep talk.]
COLIN DAVENPORT: “Alright fighters, we’ve gone through the rules in the back. I want a good, clean fight. Protect yourself at all times, follow my commands, if you wish to touch gloves, do it now and let’s get it.”
[Without much hesitation, both fighters touch gloves and backpedal to their corners. Colin Davenport checks off with each fighter one last time and signals for the bell!]

[Referee Colin Davenport signals the start of the fight and both fighters meet in the middle to touch gloves. After breaking, Aries Reed looks to close the distance going for the body and only grazes Travis Decker’s arm; but the power was enough to elicit a reaction from the champion who looks at Reed and unleashes a High Kick that lands right on Reed’s ribs and makes the challenger reel backward!]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Brutal kick to the ribs. You know, JJ, everyone loves to see the head kicks, the blood and bruises, but the shots to the body can have loooong lasting effects in a fight that can really hinder a fighter’s strength, stamina, and overall game plan.”
JASON JACKSON: “It doesn’t matter if it’s to the head, or to the body, those kicks HURT. He has some thunder in those legs. He doesn’t want to eat too many of those. ”
[Reed looks for space and gets it after a couple of jabs helped him slow Decker’s pace down. Both fighters circle in the center of the cage, after having tasted some of each other’s power it’s evident neither of them is willing to launch at something and allow for the other to take advantage. A looping left from Reed goes awry and Decker capitalizes with a couple of jabs, a cross, and a hook that set up a brutal high kick from Travis Decker that almost sent Reed’s head to another state completely. Most fans are in awe as to how Aries Reed remains on his feet after that blow.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Oh my god! That was a filthy combo from Decker. That man is mixing it up perfectly and flowing like water.”
JASON JACKSON: “HOW!? How is he still standing after that kick? Reed has the chin of a god. That kick was nasty!”
[Decker moves forward, looking to finish the fight but is met with a stiff jab and hook combo from Reed. Decker counters with some jabs of his own; but is surprised by a right-hand hook from Reed that stumbles the champion and the crowd is going wild! Reed doesn’t go for the kill right away, opting instead to recover some of his breath. Reed moves forward jabbing at the champion to no visible effect.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Heavy hands from Aries Reed swings the momentum. He’s definitely got the champ’s attention now.”
JASON JACKSON: “Check hook keeps the champ honest, and he takes a minute to reassess. One thing he does NOT want to do is disrespect the striking of Aries Reed. You may be good, but one shot can turn out the lights. You have to be wary of that.”
[A furious Overhand by Reed comes up short and Decker takes advantage with a one-two-three combo that wobbles the challenger. Yet the sheer instincts of Aries Reed prevents him from going down without a fight as he throws a powerful straight left that stumbles the champion backward and forces him to take a step back and regroup.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots! These two are letting the fists fly!”
[Decker throws a middle kick that lands right on Aries Reed’s ribs and forces the challenger to grapple, putting the champion in a double underhook. Decker pushes his opponent away, trying to keep the fight on the feet. A one-two-low kick combo from Decker puts Reed on wobbly legs and forces the challenger to back off and regroup.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Decker continues to switch up his targets. Very effectively chopping away at the legs, that damage will accumulate over the course of the fight and cause major issues for Reed.”
JASON JACKSON: “It will indeed. It’ll start to limit speed, mobility, power… The leg kick is criminally under used and underrated.”
[As the round winds down, Aries Reed surprises the champion with double overhooks and looks to take the fight to the ground. Decker tries to scramble away from his opponent but this gives Reed enough space to launch a couple of uppercuts. The champion seems to be in loads of trouble as he can’t get away from his opponent who keeps throwing and trying to grapple him to the mat. But just as things started to seem bleak, Decker lands a furious knee that breaks the clinch as the round comes to a close.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Wooooo! What a way to finish the round! I gotta tell ya JJ, I’d hate to be a judge responsible for scoring that round. That frame swung back and forth. Just when you think one guy is in full control, a big rally flips the script.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah, I think I have to give the champ the advantage. He pushed the pace, controlled the action the most, and was the more aggressive fighter. 10-9 for sure.”

[The second round starts right where the first ended, Travis Decker is not going to give any second to Aries Reed as he unleashes a high kick that lands and stumbles Aries Reed against the cage. As he recovers, Reed tries a desperation shot only to eat another kick to the head! Decker waits for his opponent to get back to his feet and throws a haymaker, followed by a middle kick then a high kick! The crowd is going wild as Reed is not defending effectively.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Aries Reed is hurt badly, Jason! He’s taken a lot of damage in a short amount of time. He needs to get some distance and regain his wits or this one won’t last much longer.”
JASON JACKSON: “I honestly have no idea how he’s still in this fight. He is taking some real punishment here and if he doesn’t defend himself this one is going to be over. Can he rally back..?”
[Colin Davenport is asking Reed to defend himself, but Reed only stands there eating a hook and a cross from Decker. The referee has seen enough and jumps in saving Reed from any more punishment!]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Nope, that’s it! This one is all over, ladies and gentlemen! Travis Decker storms in and sends Aries Reed to No Man’s Land. Travis Decker retains the 185 pound Championship and now ties the all-time Middleweight record of four consecutive title defenses. Congrats to Ripcord!”
JASON JACKSON: “Another one for Decker, and he’s looking in prime form. I don’t know if there is anyone that can stop him right now. Who do you put in front of him next? Oh I know… BYRON MCCALL. You’re up big dawg.”
[The crowd explodes into cheers while Decker celebrates with his cornermen. The Ringside Physicians rush into the octagon and immediately tend to Reed. After a few moments pass, Aries is able to stand on his own, so the medical team files out of the cage so both fighters can meet back in the center of the octagon for the official call.]
MIKE DEMPSEY: “Ladies and gentlemen, referee Colin Davenport has called for a stop in this fight at one minute forty-nine seconds in the second round, declaring your winner by technical knockout, AND STILL the undisputed Union Grand Prix Middleweight Champion of the World, “Ripcord” Travis Decker!”
[The crowd cheers once again as Decker has his hand raised in victory and the title wrapped around his waist. Both fighters shake hands as a gesture of mutual respect before splitting off to their respective crews. BODIE SULLIVAN: “Welcome back ladies and gentlemen. As we wrap up the final commercial break, we are just minutes away from the Bantamweight Championship Main Event. It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for, especially this man in the front row here tonight, former Bantamweight Champion Dallas Meechan. Playboy went 0 for 2 against Gianna Howard, costing him his historically lengthy title reign, but you best believe that did not dishearten him. It may take some moves and fights to go a certain way, but I have faith that we will see Dally in a title fight soon enough.”
JASON JACKSON: “I think so too. Some losses take a while to get over. My losses to both Roscoe Robinson and Brandon Bitch Boy Banks, for example. But once he gets his mind right and decides he loves this shit again, he’ll be back on that horse. He’s too good not to.”

[The lights cut out in the arena, replaced by swirling greens and yellows as the fans erupt in cheers for the hometown title challenger long before she ever emerges. A spotlight shines right on the curtain, Normally, on fight night, Isabel Azevedo is stone-faced serious, but as she pushes through the curtain to a roar of approval, she just can’t be–a beaming smile on her face, Izzi extends both arms out, slapping hands with every single fan that wants to, even stopping her whole procession at one point to take a photo with a younger fan on the aisle.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “There is absolutely zero doubt who this crowd backs in this Main Event fight, Jason. Isabel Azevedo; the Pride of Brazil, the São Paulo native, the submission specialist. In the biggest fight of her life, she looks ready as ever to knock off the next big thing and take that distinction and that golden hardware. All of her wins have been by stoppage — four submissions and one knockout. She’s got all of the tools needed to become a champion, but the level of experience is the biggest hang up. A fight with this magnitude will absolutely garner the experience needed to sit atop a division as stacked as the Bantamweights.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yep, biggest test of her career for sure. This is the pinnacle of it all. Anyone can be a good fighter. Anyone can string some wins together. But to be a champion? That elevates you from “good” to “great”. That gets your name circulating in conversations for GOAT status, or Hall of fame. That gets you PAID. This fight could be a gateway to another lifestyle entirely for Izzy. This could change her life. All she has to do is seize the moment. Can she do it?”
[Izzi finally makes her way to cageside, peeling off her warm up gear and passing it off to her teammates before embracing each one. The last of her corner keeps a hold of Izzi for a little longer than the rest, giving her a last second pep talk before she’s released to get inspected. Once cleared, Izzi shuffles up the steps to the cage, stopping at the door to turn and hold her arms out to the audience, as if she were trying to embrace every single one of them simultaneously, before turning back and nearly sprinting across the entire length of the cage. She exhales a deep breath before circling around the cage, eventually settling into her corner.]

[The camera cuts to the hallway leading to the entrance walk, to the Throne MMA team and the Bantamweight Champion, Gianna Howard. She’s forsaken most of the usual walkout gear for something a little less traditional: a black beanie and sunglasses on, an American flag tied around her neck like a cape, and the Bantamweight Championship around her waist. Gianna saunters her way through the hall, taking her sweet time to finally get to the curtain. A spotlight fixes on the aisle as The Ghost and her team emerge to a chorus of boos, and notably? There’s no air guitar tonight, her usual dance party en route to the cage is canceled; instead, the Bantamweight Champion makes a point to blow kisses to some of the more antagonistic fans, no small contingent of whom have started chanting “Uh Vai Morrer” at The Ghost, who almost seems to bathe in the antagonistic reaction.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “And with the final walkout of the night, “The Ghost” Gianna Howard is fully embracing the role of the villain. I haven’t heard a crowd turn on a fighter this bluntly in quite some time. G has foregone her typical flashy entrance in favor of poking the bear and fueling the hatred from the crowd. Make no mistake, the hostile territory has zero effect on the Champ. She’s got ice coursing through her veins. She talks the talk, and walks the walk. She absolutely body-bagged the most successful and longest reigning Bantamweight Champion Dallas Meechan not once, but twice, but we know she has a crack in her armor. Her most recent loss was by submission, and I’m sure she’s trained hard to avoid that situation again. We’ll have to wait no longer to see how she handles Izzi’s grappling.”
JASON JACKSON: “This is one of my favorite fighters in the game right now. No, really. I’m not just saying that. I love her. Ice in her veins is an accurate statement. She is a killer. An absolute killer. Her most recent loss was by submission, but you can guarantee she trained and trained and trained some more when it came to Jiu Jitsu in this camp. I know she’s coming into this prepared. Gianna isn’t letting anyone take her throne.”
[Taking much longer than normal, Gianna eventually makes her way to cageside and starts to strip off most of her costume apparel. Hat, glasses, flag and title all get removed and passed off to members of her corner, each coupled with an embrace before she turns to the cageside official and goes through the pre-fight inspection. Once she’s given the OK, she climbs up the steps into the cage, moving straight to the center of the cage and stretching her arms out, letting the fans get as much animosity out as possible, before practically peacock strutting to her corner.]
MIKE DEMPSEY: “Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time for the Main Event of the evening! Sanctioned by the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission, our three judges scoring this contest at cageside are Edson Vila, Miguel Reis, and Davi Justo, and when the action begins, our referee in charge in the octagon is Archie Driscoll. AND NOW, this is the moment you’ve all been waiting for! Live from the sold out Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, broadcasted exclusively on the Battleground Network, IT’S TIME! The following contest is scheduled for five rounds and it is for the Union Grand Prix Bantamweight Championship! Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Grappler holding a professional mixed martial arts record of five wins, one loss. She stands 5’7”, and weighing in at 135 pounds. She is from Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, fighting out of Nova Uniao in Rio de Janeiro, presenting the number one ranked Bantamweight Contender in the World, “Maravilha” Isabel Azevedo!”
[Isabel Azevedo is calm in her corner. She looks convinced of her abilities.]
MIKE DEMPSEY: “And her opponent, fighting out of the red corner, a Kickboxer holding a professional mixed martial arts record of nine wins, two losses. She stands 5’6”, and weighing in at 135 pounds. She is from Las Vegas, Nevada, fighting out of Throne MMA, presenting the reigning, defending, undisputed Union Grand Prix Bantamweight Champion in the World, “The Ghost” Gianna Howard!”
[Gianna Howard looks like she has been waiting for this fight forever.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “And. Here. We. Go! A possible twenty-five minutes to decide who walks out of Rio de Janeiro with championship gold around their waist.”
JASON JACKSON: “Listen to this crowd. I think the rafters might come down. I know they’re ready. We’re ready, and the fighters are ready. Without further ado… let’s get this shit popping.”
[The referee steps to the center of the cage and motions for both fighters to meet. With the announcer standing behind, holding the microphone, referee Archie Driscoll gives one final pep talk.]
ARCHIE DRISCOLL: “Alright fighters, we’ve gone through the rules in the back. Protect yourself at all times, follow my instructions, touch gloves and let’s do it.”
[Without much hesitation, both fighters touch gloves and backpedal to their corners. Archie Driscoll checks off with each fighter one last time and signals for the bell!]

[Referee Archie Driscoll looks at both fighters and tells them to fight. Gianna and Azevedo touch gloves in the center of the cage and begin circling around each other. Howard launches a low kick, more than anything to measure distance; Azevedo is able to dodge it. Azevedo throws a right-hand jab much to the same effect as Howard’s low kick. Another right hand allows Azevedo to hide a takedown attempt behind it and fools Howard. Now The Ghost is trying to scramble and thwart the takedown attempt by Azevedo!]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Izzi Azevedo isn’t trying to play games here and goes for the early takedown. Gianna Howard is struggling to stuff the attempt.”
JASON JACKSON: “Nice move to get her back against the cage and keep herself standing though. Veteran knowledge by Howard.”
[Howard has her back against the cage and uses it to keep herself on her feet and finally get away from Azevedo as quickly as she can. Azevedo moves forward and Howard throws a front kick that gets blocked. A flurry of punches by Azevedo staggers Howard and the fans here in Brazil begin to rally behind their girl in Isabel Azevedo!]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Fists of fury from Isabel Azevedo! She’s tagging Howard oh so effortlessly.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah, most folks think all she has is a submission game but she has some hands too. She will put you down either way.”
[Relentless pressure is being applied here by Azevedo, she has Gianna Howard on the backpedal and she continues throwing punches. Gianna blocks some, and eats some of the punches getting thrown at her. She attempts to mount her counter-striking game but comes up empty handed as Azevedo continues pushing the pace here. A sweep single by Azevedo trips Gianna and now the fight has gone to Azevedo’s realm!]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Boom! Textbook takedown from Azevedo! Gianna Howard needs to stay calm here and not allow herself to get into any dangerous situations.”
JASON JACKSON: “Easier said than done. I struggled off my back for most of my career because I hated being there, so I’d panic. Especially with getting submitted her last time out. She’s going to be looking for a way out of dodge real quick.”
[Gianna struggles to get Azevedo off of her, but Azevedo’s slick BJJ game allows her to snap in a kneebar. The hold seems to be bothering Howard a bit as she frantically throws kicks looking to relieve the pressure and maybe find a way out of the ground. Howard finally finds that one kick to the thigh that makes Azevedo release the pressure and The Ghost is finally free and pops back to her feet. Howard throws a loud kick to Azevedo’s thigh before referee Archie Driscoll allows time for Azevedo to get back to her feet.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Nice escape from Howard. I bet her cornermen got a little nervous there. When you can sink in a submission early in the fight, you don’t have that sweat to help you slip free. You hear fighters say that if you get caught deep enough, it’s like fly paper.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah and who knows how much damage that did to her leg in just the short amount of time she was fighting out of that. Leg locks are no joke.”
[Gianna keeps her distance from her opponent as Azevedo senses this fight might be turning her way and doesn’t want to let up. The pride of Brazil catches up with the Champ and takes her down once again! The momentum Azevedo had by taking Gianna down, worked against her as Howard is able to reverse position on the ground and now she’s the one controlling the fight… or so she thought as Azevedo catches one mistake from Gianna Howard and catches her in a Triangle! Howard struggles to get out of the hold! The fans are now on their feet!]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “This could be it! Isabel Azevedo has the triangle choke and it looks deep!”
JASON JACKSON: “OH shit! That came out of nowhere! Gianna is turning red.”
[A frantic attempt by Howard to get up from the mat, she musters every bit of strength she has and LIFTS AZEVEDO OFF OF THE MAT SLAMMING HER BACK DOWN! This caused Azevedo’s grip to loosen up and the slam managed to silence the crowd for a split second! Archie Driscoll is on top of the situation as Azevedo might’ve been knocked out by the slam!]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Gianna Howard just picked up Isabel Azevedo like an Uber Ride, but Izzi’s not liking the destination!”
JASON JACKSON: “Is she out? Looks like the ref is real interested in– No. She’s still in the fight! Another submission attempt!”
[Driscoll is close to Azevedo, but doesn’t stop the fight as Azevedo is still fighting and tries for another triangle, this time the attempt gets obstructed by Howard… but Azevedo quickly transitions into an Armbar! Gianna tries to slam her opponent again, but Azevedo realizes this and lets go of the Armbar only to look for a Kimura! Gianna senses danger and blocks the attempt by throwing some ground strikes; Azevedo manages to reverse position and get on top of Gianna and look for another submission, but Howard manages to thwart any attempt by Azevedo as the round comes to a close.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “What a dominant round for Isabel Azevedo! Outside of that slam, she controlled every bit of the round. JJ, I’d almost say that borders on a 10-8 scorecard.”
JASON JACKSON: “For sure a 10-8. Gianna needs to shake off the nerves and get back into this bitch. I think the crowd is getting to her. Izzy however is looking right at home. I’m stoked for this second round. ”

[By the way Gianna Howard opened the second round, one might think she had enough of Azevedo controlling the fight as she started things off with a fast low kick that landed. She then begins utilizing her tried and true strategy of “stick and move”; with Azevedo trying to land jabs only to eat combinations from all sorts of awkward angles. A couple of body shots tag Azevedo and the momentum Isabel had in the first round has completely gone here at the start of the second round.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Gianna Howard starts round two on a much better note and has found a solid rhythm with her striking.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah, looks like she just needed to get those first 5 minutes out of the way to shake off the nerves. Her corner did a good job bringing her back to reality and getting her centered it looks like.”
[A high kick from Gianna Howard lands and opens up a small laceration over Azevedo’s right eye, no doubt something referee Archie Driscoll might want to keep an eye out for. Desperation is starting to mount on Azevedo as she forces a single leg takedown that gets blocked by Howard who in turn counters with an Oblique Kick that visibly pains Azevedo. A couple of jabs from Azevedo miss and she eats a spinning back kick from Howard that miraculously doesn’t end the fight right then and there!]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Oooh! Izzi gets cracked and Howard now has the fight in her hands. Izzi is looking hesitant now, and rightfully so, after eating those head kicks.”
JASON JACKSON: “Oh how the turntables have turned. The champ has hopped in the driver’s seat and she’s stomping the gas pedal now. A beautiful spinning back kick almost levels Izzy Azevedo.”
[Another takedown attempt by Azevedo goes nowhere as Gianna counters with a middle kick that Azevedo blocks with her arm and there’s a pop that gets heard through the silence of the crowd. Isabel tries, as she might, to get the fight to the ground, but Howard denies her and pushes her, making Azevedo fall to the ground and pull guard. From there Azevedo tries pulling Gianna down with her, but the champion keeps denying the challenger until she can any longer and now she has to scramble with Azevedo again.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Azevedo drags the fight back down to the mat, let’s see how Gianna reacts.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah, but how much energy is this eating up? Multiple stuffed takedowns just to FINALLY get one? She needs to be wary that she has 3 more rounds ahead of her, not one. Save some of that gas for the home stretch if it gets there.”
[Gianna Howard shows some prowess on the ground, not letting Azevedo control the fight there and moving as well as she can. Howard manages to catch Azevedo in an Armbar of her own, but Azevedo quickly thwarts the attempt. A couple more exchanges on the ground with no real offensive attempts being made and Archie Driscoll gets both fighters back to their feet. A low kick from Howard lands hard on Azevedo’s left leg; followed by an Oblique Kick that seems to really have hurt Azevedo as she winces in pain just as the buzzer hits. Gianna moves calmly to her corner, while Azevedo limps towards hers.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “A much better performance for the champion Gianna Howard. Great adjustments made between rounds, Howard kept the fight on the feet and towards the end there targeted the legs and it appears that she did some damage. You could see Izzi limping a bit on her way to her corner.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah that one was a 10-9 for Gianna. I did see Izzy limping a bit as she headed back to the corner. Looks like that oblique kick hyperextended her knee. Hopefully she can come back out and continue the fight. It looks like she’s going to continue but she’s still limping hard.”

[The Ghost seems like a shark that just smelled blood in the water. Azevedo limps her way to the center of the cage, evidently, that last Oblique Kick did some real damage to her knee as she doesn’t seem keen on putting weight on that leg and has changed stance as a result of it. Still, there’s no quit in the challenger as she swings at Howard even if she doesn’t land many of the strikes and eats some great jabs from Howard; who is now on her bicycle and is running away with the fight.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Oh yeah. There’s something going on with Izzi’s leg there, JJ. She can’t even disguise it.”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah, she may have torn something in her knee to be honest. It doesn’t look good.”
[A solid middle kick from Howard wrenches Azevedo; followed by a High Kick that takes Azevedo out of it. Howard then lands a low kick that lands right behind the injured knee of Azevedo and Archie Driscoll has seen enough; he jumps in to save Azevedo who, by instinct, lets her body fall over the referee as she can’t deal with the pain that much longer.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Archie Driscoll steps in and waves off the fight! Gianna Howard remains the Bantamweight Champion here tonight in Brazil!”
JASON JACKSON: “Yeah, her knee is FUCKED Bodie. Something tore. Howard smelled the blood and she came in for the finish like the shark that she is. Your UGP bantamweight queen, ladies and gentlemen.”
[The crowd booms with jeers as Gianna celebrates with her cornermen. The Ringside Physicians rush into the octagon and immediately tend to Izzy. After a few moments pass, Izzy is able to stand on her own, so the medical team files out of the cage so both fighters can meet back in the center of the octagon for the official call.]
MIKE DEMPSEY: “Ladies and gentlemen, referee Archie Driscoll has called for a stop in this fight at one minute twenty-eight seconds in the third round, declaring your winner by technical knockout, AND STILL the undisputed Union Grand Prix Bantamweight Champion of the World, “The Ghost” Gianna Howard!”
[The crowd continues to boo once again as Howard has her hand raised in victory and the title wrapped around her waist. Both fighters shake hands as a gesture of mutual respect before splitting off to their respective crews. A graphic pops up on screen, breaking down the statistics of the fight while the commentators recap.]

[The decision to stop the fight was not a popular one by any means, and the Brazilian fans make their disdain known; nonetheless, Gianna uses the time it takes Bodie Sullivan to get into the cage to go over and check on Isabel, bumping fists with her challenger and the Nova Uniao camp before she comes back to the center of the cage. The interview can’t get started right away, as the fans are booing too loudly, but eventually, Bodie has to just speak over them.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m here with the winner and still the Bantamweight Champion of the World, Gianna Howard, and Gianna, a tough outing at first, but you managed to turn it around in the second and, like we’ve seen you do so many times in Everest in particular, you just kept chopping her down with those leg kicks until she couldn’t go on. Did anything surprise you in this fight, was there anything you weren’t ready for?”
GIANNA HOWARD: “To tell you the truth, Bodie, I didn’t expect her to hit that hard.”
[Gianna laughs a little bit, shaking her head before she continues.]
GIANNA HOWARD: “I mean…you kinda know what to expect with Isabel, yanno? We’ve seen her, what’s it been, 7, 8 fights now, she never doesn’t go for a takedown? Yeah, we’ve seen her start to get a little more confident with her hands, but you know she wants the fight on the ground, you know she wants that submission, and that first round…I’m kinda mad at myself for letting her hit me, especially that hard.”
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Speaking of that first round, it was a swarm of submissions coming at you, but you managed to fight out of all of them; the triangle in particular looked bad, how close was it?”
[Gianna shakes her head negatively, clicking her tongue.]
GIANNA HOWARD: “It was tight, but I wasn’t going out, I obviously had enough to get out of it. But, I mean, that’s what we prepared for. It’s not a big secret what Izzi wants, we knew she was going to want to get it to the ground, we were pretty sure that’s the only place she’d really be able to try to finish me, so…that was the focus, was preparing for that attack, preparing for those submissions.”
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Every time we hear from you, you’re a very passionate person, you wear your heart on your sleeve, so tell me, how are you feeling right now, having stepped out in front of Izzi’s people, in her hometown, and come up with a win like that?”
[The crowd’s booing only gets louder, but Gianna just smiles and shakes her head.]
GIANNA HOWARD: “Aww, come on, Rio.”
[The only way the Brazilian fans “come on” is by getting even louder, and interrupting The Ghost before she can continue. For her part, Gianna takes it all with a laugh, giving them a few seconds before speaking back up.]
GIANNA HOWARD: “But, seriously, I love it, man. You can call it enemy territory, that’s cool, but…this is what I do, this what I love doing, so getting to put on a show for a rabid group of people like we’ve got here, it was great. And Izzi’s a tough girl, Bodie; I hit her with shots that have put other people down, and she kept coming, kept pushing. I know Rio doesn’t like seeing me get my hand raised, but to make a statement here tonight, against a tough chick like that…nah, I couldn’t be happier right now.”
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Despite taking a couple big shots in the first round, you really didn’t come out of this fight with a whole lot of damage, which obviously begs the question, when do you want to get back in here, and…is there anything specific you’re looking for, any fight you want in particular?”
[Gianna actually takes the mic from Bodie and takes half a step closer to the camera, as if it somehow made the point she was about to make more clear if she were closer to the camera.]
GIANNA HOWARD: “Okay, let me make this real clear: A. S. A. P. I don’t care who it’s against, I don’t care where we do it, I don’t care, just get me back in this cage as soon as freakin’ possible. Lena, Lilly, Tim, if Dallas wants a third round, Parsons, whoever, wherever, but As. Soon. As. Possible. I hate these long layoffs between fights, I want at least 2 more defenses by the end of the year.”
[Her bit said, she takes a step back from the camera, passing the mic back to Bodie.]
BODIE SULLIVAN: “Well, that’s up to the boss man, but I think you’ve staked a pretty good claim to get what you want tonight. Ladies and gentlemen, the Bantamweight Champion of the World, Gianna Howard!”
