BACKSTORY
Chris Simmons arrived at DRIP 2 with quiet confidence and a reputation as a disciplined, no frills middleweight. But under the bright lights of the Union GP tryout show, he fell short, succumbing to a 49-second knockout in the first round by future Union GP middleweight champion, Noah Vanderkaay. The loss cut deep, as it was his first professional loss. Simmons stepped away from competition entirely, questioning whether he belonged at the next level.
Instead of disappearing for good, he relocated to northern Mexico, immersing himself in smaller gyms and rebuilding his approach to fighting. When he resurfaced in Campeonato de Lucha Azteca, he looked sharper, less rushed, more composed, and mentally tougher. His boxing fundamentals had tightened, his defensive wrestling improved, and most importantly, his confidence returned.
Simmons now fights with the understanding that careers aren’t defined by one night. CLA has become his proving ground, and while he’s still chasing redemption, every performance suggests the version of Chris Simmons who failed at DRIP 2 may no longer exist.
