BACKSTORY
Ryan is the mentor figure of NextGen Combat. Calm, respectful, and extremely technical, he believes discipline and fundamentals are the keys to long-term success in MMA. He rarely trash talks and prefers to let his performances speak for themselves. Outside the cage he acts as the gym’s striking coach, helping develop the young prospects’ stand-up games.
Ryan Calder grew up training traditional karate under his father in Honolulu before transitioning into kickboxing and eventually MMA. During the early years of his career he built a reputation as one of the slickest strikers on the regional circuit, earning multiple highlight-reel knockouts.
After competing around the world for over a decade, Ryan joined NextGen Combat to help guide the next generation of fighters. While he still competes occasionally, his true passion is developing the gym’s young prospects and passing down the lessons learned throughout his long career.
