BACKSTORY
Yanno the cliche about the middle child? The one who needs to act up for the sake of attention? The one that’s easy to goad into doing crazier and crazier things, just because…why not, right? That’s Tania, in a nutshell, and it has been her entire life. The 4th of 7 children in her family, Tania became interested in martial arts from a young age, but her parents didn’t want her to get involved in anything violent–so, they found a compromise, and allowed her to start lessons in Capoeira. And it worked, for a while; Tania threw herself into Capoeira for quite a while, but over time, it wasn’t enough. She knew what she wanted, and she began to beg her parents to allow her to join an MMA gym. They adamantly refused at first, but Tania eventually whittled them down, and she was allowed to join the nearest BJJ school: the Chute Boxe Academy in Sao Paulo.
Beginning in the kids class, it became Tania’s obsession–she rose quickly thru the kid’s belt ranks, and when she turned 16, was promoted directly to her purple belt. Now an adult by Academy standards, she joined the Muay Thai and Judo classes, before turning her focus to MMA. She refused to take fights until she was sure she could be “the best one on any card I’m on,” so her first fight wasn’t until she was 20–but then, she threw herself at every card that would have her, amassing a 9-2 record in Brazil, including a knockout by cartwheel kick and a flying armbar submission. The recent success of her teammate, Marcela Vargas, has given Tania the hope to draw that same attention and hype for herself, and she sent her highlight reel to Union GP, claiming she was willing to fight “anyone, anywhere, at any weight” if it meant getting an opportunity.
