RFC 3: Duality

[Dante Reed has been in the combat sports business for years now. He launched his career as a play-by-play commentator in the successful but turbulent pro wrestling company, Union Battleground. Working tirelessly to become the kingpin of mixed martial arts, he’s a man who knows how to negotiate a deal. He had built his promotion to be the gold standard of MMA, and he was always looking for ways to expand his empire.]

[He had a vision for a new, exclusive venue for Ryūjin FC, a state-of-the-art facility that would be the envy of the entire industry which would continue to accommodate his high-class clientele as well as extend the invitation to the lower middle-class rabid fan base. The problem was, Union Grand Prix and all of its brands were operated through branch accounting to allow for greater transparency in the transactions, cash flows, and overall financial position and performance of each brand. This meant he needed the funding from some outside investors, as Ryūjin FC is still in its infancy.]

[That’s when he received a call from an unexpected source – the Yakuza.]

KATO: “Mr. Reed, my name is Kato. I represent the Yakuza, and we have heard that you are in need of funding for a new venue.”

[Dante listened to the initial pitch and agreed to meet with Kato in person, so they arranged to meet at a private sake bar in downtown Tokyo a few weeks prior to RFC 3. Dante knew he was playing with fire, but the money was too good to pass up.]

[The time had come. Dante arrived at the designated location, a small, dimly lit bar in the heart of Tokyo. As he entered, he felt the eyes of the patrons on him, sizing him up, judging him. He made his way to the back of the bar, where he saw a group of men sitting at a table. They wore dark suits, their faces obscured by the shadows.]

[As he entered the dimly lit room, Dante could feel the tension in the air. The Yakuza were known for their ruthless tactics, and he knew that he needed to tread carefully. He also knew that he had something they wanted, something that would make them a lot of money. He sat down at the table and laid out his proposal. He explained his plans for the new venue, and the Yakuza bosses listened intently.]

[They were impressed, but they weren’t willing to hand over their money just yet. They wanted something in return.]

KATO: “We are interested in investing in your project, but we require certain assurances.”

[Dante nodded again, his mind racing. He had expected some kind of negotiation, but he didn’t know what the Yakuza would demand.]

DANTE REED: “… And what’s that?”

[Kato leaned forward, his eyes fixed on Dante.]

KATO: “We require a percentage of the profits and we require that you give us access to the venue at all times. For security purposes.”

[Dante hesitated. Giving the Yakuza access to the venue would surely be a huge security risk, but he knew he needed their money to make the new venue a reality.]

DANTE REED: “I’ll need some time to consider.”

[Kato smiled, but it was a cold, calculating smile.]

KATO: “Of course. But don’t take too long. We don’t like to be kept waiting.”

[Dante left the bar feeling uneasy. He knew he was in deep with the Yakuza now, and he didn’t know if he could trust them. But he also knew he had no other options. He needed their money to make the new venue a reality.]

[The next day, Dante received another call from Kato. He wanted to meet again, to finalize the deal. Dante agreed to meet, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that he was walking into a trap. He arrived at the same bar and sat down at the table with Kato and his associates. Kato smiled at him, but this time, Dante could see the malice in his eyes.]

KATO: “We’ve decided to up our investment. We’re willing to front the entire bill, but we require something more in return.”

[Dante’s heart sank. He knew this was it. The moment of truth.]

DANTE REED: “What do you want?”

[Kato leaned forward, his voice low and menacing.]

KATO: “We want you to throw the Championship fight.”

[Dante felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead. He couldn’t betray his fighters, his fans, his own principles.]

DANTE REED: “I’m sorry, Kato, but I can’t do that.”

[Kato’s smile vanished. The silence in the room was deafening. Time stood still, but then, Kato’s ears perked and a slight grin cracked the edge of his mouth.]

KATO: “Mr. Reed, if you make this deal, you will never have to worry about another dime for Ryūjin FC. I advise you to take the time to think this through. Don’t do something that you’ll regret later.”

[Kato stood from his chair and extended his hand out to Dante.]

KATO: “Come RFC 3, we expect an answer. It’s been a pleasure, Mr. Reed.”

[Dante watched as Kato and the rest of the Yakuza walked out of the bar, leaving him alone in the dark, empty room. He knew he had just made the biggest mistake of his life, but he also knew he couldn’t betray everything he had worked for. He had to find a way out of this mess. Dante’s mind whirled with the weight of his decision. He had crossed a line, a point of no return. The treacherous path he had chosen would have dire repercussions. With a heavy heart, he watched Kato and his cronies depart, leaving him alone in the desolate, suffocating darkness of the room. Regret clawed at his soul, but he knew he had to confront the chilling reality that potentially awaited him.]

After a stalemate, the referee decided to stand the fighters up due to the lack of action. As they resumed their stand-up battle, McMillan launched a stiff jab that grazed Ryo’s face. Unfortunately, it also inadvertently poked Ryo’s eye, prompting the referee to temporarily halt the fight for Ryo to recover. Determined to continue, Ryo signaled his readiness after a few moments, and the fight resumed. McMillan attempted to stand up, prompting the referee to intervene and stand Ryo up as well. The fight resumed with both fighters back on their feet. The moment the fight recommenced, they unleashed a frenzy of punches, exhibiting lightning-fast reflexes and sheer power. It was a spectacle to behold as the blows flew through the air, narrowly missing their intended targets. Then, in a stunning turn of events, Ryo suffered a devastating blow that sent him stumbling backward. [Japanese theme pinspots swirl across the massive screen of the new Tron perched atop the entrance ramp of the crown jewel of the MMA  world, the Nippon Budokan of Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. The fog machines belch thick white clouds of voluminous smoke across the metal grating of the stage looking out over the newly installed seating here in the arena, as the stage crew finishes setting up the stage for the weigh-in that will be taking place here in just a few hours.]

[Fans in attendance mill about between the merch vendors and the autograph lines, or waiting on concessions or the bar. New signees to the Ryujin who have yet to be booked matches or developmental talent meet with fans and take pictures or sign merch as they make their way around the room. Techs double and triple check the mics and equipment, making sure the sound settings are just right and that everything is going to run smooth as silk later tonight.]

[Several hours later, after all of the VIP guests and fans had made it to their skyboxes or seats respectively, and the press had lined up in their asigned places, the lights of the arena dim and the audience settles in for the first weigh-ins of the relaunch. Excitement is high, and everyone in attendance is seemingly having a great time with the fanfare and glamor of the event.]

[Finally, as the bright white spotlights swing back and forth across the audience and the red and white pinspots dance across the walls and ceilings high above, the place comes unglued as everyone’s favorite MMA reporter Isaac Cohen walks onto the stage and up to the podium that sits between two tables reserved for each competitor and their team. Issac taps on the microphone to make sure it’s working properly as a squelch rings out across the arena and everyone groans before settling down. Cohen looks out across the assembled fans and smiles widely as he brings the microphone slowly to his lips.]

ISAAC COHEN: “Welcome to Nippon Budokan of Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan!”

[Isaac swings his arms wide open towards the crowd and tosses his head back to soak in the cheap local pop that ensues for several moments.]

ISAAC COHEN: “I know you are all excited to be here for this weigh- in and so am I. When I got the  call and they asked for me to oversee this, I couldn’t help but smile and gladly accept. It’s not every day you get to take part in a big time weigh-in. However, when it comes to these two taking part in it, I think it is only appropriate that they have a face to face before their match on May 28th, so let’s get this weigh-in rolling, shall we?”

[Issac takes the microphone off the podium as he walks his way across the front of the stage.]

ISAAC COHEN: “Now then, let’s welcome our first competitor, from Los Angeles California, I give you BIG MONEY TYLER CAGE!”

[On cue, Tyler comes to a stop on stage and flexes as the announcer says his name and then pyro goes off behind him and the Baddies just point at him to signal he is HIM!]

[Tyler then gives his robe and shades to the Baddies and then makes his way towards the podium with his Christ Center Wrestling Christcore Championship on his shoulder. He smirks with confidence as he looks at the fans and media members in attendance.]

TYLER CAGE: “BIG MONEY HAS ARRIVED IN JAPAN!”

[Tyler gets a mixed reaction from the audience but it doesn’t faze him as he just smiles and antagonizes him some more.]

TYLER CAGE: “That’s right my haters keep showing The Biggest Draw in combat sports all the love! I can’t lie, it’s been a good week for BIG MONEY. Christ Center Wrestling has the Champ headlining in a major event, I just recently took Ladies Foot Team to the playoffs and I humbled my little brother run WGWF Brawl so yeah you can say I stay winning and that’s not going to change on May 28th when I step inside the cage and face your hometown hero Masami Rose! His record is impressive but I don’t give a damn about it because he never faced someone like me before and like I’ve done my last two fights I will prove the doubters wrong and put my name in the elite status of this sport when I knock your top model on his ass and down for the count!”

[The fans erupt in major disapproval towards Tyler but again he shrugs it off and walks over to the scale for his weigh-in. He steps on and lets the scale get his exact weight as he flexes towards the crowd, he steps off once it’s completed and Issac looks over the numbers before making the announcement.]

ISAAC COHEN: “Big Money Tyler Cage official weigh in, the dog his fight with Masami Rose, is 210 pounds!”

[Tyler flexes again once the announcement is made and then does a backflip on stage and as he lands on his feet, he shoots the middle finger at the audience and then proceeds to laugh as he heads towards his table to take a seat as Issac gets ready to announce Rose.]

[The Piano intro to Kanye West’s Runaway begins to play as those in attendance begin to cheer. As the beat drops, Masami Rose walks through the door dressed in a Versace x Prodigy robe, with a troupe of scantily dressed models behind him, both male and female.]

ISAAC COHEN: “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, GOODSIDE, MASAMI ROSE!”

[Masami makes his way to the podium taking off his shades and stopping from time to time allowing the photographers to catch a few pics. He eventually makes it to the podium and soaks in the final bit of applause before he speaks.]

MASAMI ROSE: “Ie ni kaereru no wa subarashī kotoda! Koko no enerugī wa tsuneni betsu no reberu ni arimasu. Reberu ni tsuite ieba, kono otoko ni wa watashi ni taisuru junbi ga dekite inai to tsutaete kudasai.”

[He motions towards Tyler Cage and the audience erupts.  Masami smiles and stares at Cage momentarily before he continues to speak.]

MASAMI ROSE: “Kare wa hontōni minikuidesu yo ne?”

[Chants of “Hai!” Start up as Goodside’s smile grows even larger. He leans in one final time to speak, this time yelling, with a bit of conviction.]

MASAMI ROSE: “Sōdesu! Soshite, watashi ga kare to owattara, kare wa sarani minikuku narudeshou! Ninshiki dekinai, sae mo! Kare wa sō omotte iru kamo shirenai Taikin, Demo watashi wa kare o sagi-shida to bakuro suru tsumorida!”

[The crowd goes absolutely mental now as “Goodside!” Chants start up. Masami nods his head along with the chants as he removes his robe and goes to step on the scale.]

[He steps on the scale, and poses for the crowd, Issac gets the numbers and Rose steps off. He blows a kiss in Tyler’s direction as Cohen makes the announcement.]

ISAAC COHEN: “Goodside Masami Rose officially weighs in at 150 pounds!”

[Masami flexes and winks at a few fans in the front row, before stepping right up to Tyler Cage. Cage shoves Rose backwards, eliciting a fury of Boos. Masami rushes forward to shove him back but security quickly steps between the two of them creating some much needed distance. A few Prodigy members like 4dah and The Ryujin Champ C.C. Flynn hurls insults at Cage, who has a huge smile on his face as the feed cuts abruptly.]

In a display of craftiness, Cage faked a move and unleashed a clean uppercut, only to be expertly blocked by Rose, who made it look effortless. Cage’s jabs failed to have a visible effect on Rose, who aimed to counter with precision and managed to land some impressive shots that stunned his opponent. Seeking to shift the fight to the ground, Masami Rose went for a single leg takedown, successfully bringing Cage to the mat. With Rose in open guard, Cage attempted to close his guard around him but fell short in his efforts. Both fighters fiercely jockeyed for position, but neither could gain the upper hand. [The camera feed cuts backstage to the dressing room of challenger Zion Momo’a who is expected to be warming up for the upcoming main event. Instead of hitting mitts and shadowboxing as expected though, the cameras happen to catch Zion in the tail end of a heated debate with a very well dressed Japanese man who is accompanied by a much larger personal bodyguard.]

FANCY MAN: “I’m sure I don’t have to remind you what will happen if you can’t manage to do what we’ve asked?”

[The bigger guy pulls his suit jacket to the side to flash the hilt of a glock, just momentarily, and he gives Momo’a an eager grin.]

BIG GUY: “Here’s a little something to jog your memory.”

[Zion shakes his head and he’s silent for a moment as he stares the two men down but after a few moments he concedes. There’s a clear look of defeat on his face as he accepts whatever situation he’d found himself in and he replies.]

ZION MOMO’A: “Yeah. I get the point.”

???: “What is this? You two aren’t with the commission so what are you doing in here?”

[A sudden voice from behind cuts Momo’a off, and the camera wheels around to show Jason Jackson and Levi Dillinger making their way into the room. This is around the time that the three men engaged in the lively debate finally notice the camera, and the energy in the room drastically changes. The Japanese “Buisnessmen” aren’t so cocky anymore. Instead, their eyes start darting toward the exits right away.]

[Zion however looks almost relieved, especially when Jackson makes his way over to put himself beside him to square up to the “muscle” that was trying to menace the young fighter. It’s a tense moment as the four men stare each other down, waiting for someone to make a move.]

[Finally, Levi Dillinger clears his throat and breaks the deadly silence as he gestures at the camera.]

LEVI DILLINGER: “Erm…fellas. We really going to do this here? Now?”

[Neither Jackson, nor the big man budge at all but Jackson is all smiles as he begins to inaudibly chirp at the man in front of him. Probably saying something about his mother if we know Jason Jackson at all.]

[The fancy man, however, turns and speaks to his henchman in Japanese just low enough that the camera can’t pick it up. The big guy instantly takes a step back from Jackson and the two of them head for the door.]

FANCY MAN: “We were just leaving anyway. You gentlemen have a great night.”

[Levi moves out of their way and the leader exits the room quickly. The “muscle” stops at the door though and he turns back to look at Zion.]

THE MUSCLE: “Oh and Zion..? Good luck.”

[His eyes move over to Jackson for a moment and he gives the hall of famer a wink before exiting the dressing room.]

[Once they are gone, Jason turns to Zion and blows out a sigh.]

JASON JACKSON: “We gotta talk kid. Levi—”

[JJ nods at the camera, and Levi gets the hint right away. He quickly ushers the cameraman out of the room and closes the door as the feed cuts elsewhere.]

ROUND ONE: As the bell rings, both fighters meet in the center of the cage, eyes locked and adrenaline pumping. Roscoe, with his compact build and lightning-fast strikes, moves with the grace of a predator. Kennard, a towering presence with an iron jaw, exudes an aura of sheer determination. Roscoe, remembering his previous victory over Kennard, opens up the bout with a flurry of lightning-quick kicks and punches, showcasing his technical skill. He unleashes a series of vicious leg kicks, targeting Kennard’s lead leg, trying to slow down the larger opponent. Kennard, however, stands firm, weathering the storm and countering with powerful hooks and crosses, showcasing his heavyweight punching power. The crowd roars as both fighters exchange blows, their kickboxing backgrounds on full display. Roscoe, recognizing Kennard’s strength, tries to use his speed and footwork to outmaneuver his opponent. He ducks under a powerful hook and counters with a sharp left hook-right uppercut combination, staggering Kennard momentarily. But just as the fight seems to be reaching a boiling point, tragedy strikes. An accidental clash of heads occurs, causing a deep gash on both fighters’ foreheads. Blood starts to pour down their faces, staining the canvas red. The referee immediately steps in and calls for a halt to the bout. The crowd falls into a hushed silence, disappointment filling the arena as the realization sinks in that this much-anticipated rematch will end in a No Contest. Medical personnel rush into the cage to tend to the fighters’ wounds, ensuring their safety and well-being. While the disappointment lingers in the air, the respect between these warriors is evident. Despite the anticlimactic end, both Roscoe and Kennard embrace, showing admiration for each other’s skills and fortitude. The crowd rises to their feet, applauding their resilience and sportsmanship. Although the rematch did not provide a clear winner, the rivalry between Roscoe Robinson and Kennard Rozier remains alive and well. Perhaps fate will bring them together again for a third encounter, where they can finally settle the score and determine who truly reigns supreme in the world of MMA.

Momo’a throws a flurry of punches, but Flynn blocks them expertly, showcasing her defensive skills. However, the tides turn dramatically when Momo’a lands a thunderous hook on Flynn’s cheek, sending her stumbling and crashing to the mat. [The final fight had concluded, leaving behind a whirlwind of emotions. From the highest peaks of exhilaration to the deepest valleys of despair, the tens of thousands of spectators had been held captive by the spectacle that unfolded within the four corners of the ring. It was a night unlike any other, the first time Ryūjin FC had ventured beyond the boundaries of The Rumble Room proved to be a success.]

[Dante Reed walked the dark, dingy corridors of the arena, his mind racing and his heart pounding with a mix of fear and desperation. The Yakuza’s demand to throw the Championship fight still echoed through his mind, a haunting melody that tested the limits of his loyalty and morality. He felt like their fingerprints were smeared all over this card — from certain fighters, to certain officials, and to even certain judges. The whole night just didn’t feel right. Their toxic influence has already infected the company, whether he welcomed it or not. As Dante turned a corner to make his way to the parking garage, his footsteps faltered, his breath coming in shallow gasps, only to be confronted by the embodiment of the man who has been flooding his mental state for weeks.]

[Kato, a figure notorious in both reputation and infamy, stood there with an entourage of his loyal cronies, casting an oppressive shadow that seemed to swallow the surrounding darkness. Dante’s soul escaped his body, sensing the impending doom that lie ahead. What transpired in the coming moments would shape his fate and quite possibly his life, sealing his destiny in the darkest recesses of the unknown.]

KATO: “Mr. Reed, it’s been quite the challenge reaching you.”

[Kato’s gravelly voice cut through the stifling air, punctuating the silence that hung like a shroud. Dante’s mind raced, his survival instincts kicking into overdrive. He had to think fast, choose his words carefully, lest the precarious thread he clung to snapped and plunged him into the pit of despair.]

DANTE REED: “Listen, Kato,” Dante stammered, his voice laced with a desperate urgency. “I — I’ve been extremely busy with everything going on with this event. I had every intention to return your calls, but…”

[Before Dante could finish his sentence, Kato raised his open hand, a commanding gesture that silenced him instantly. A twisted smile curled upon Kato’s lips, revealing the hidden depths of his sinister intentions.]

KATO: “I’m delighted to see that you’ve come to terms with our proposal.”

[Dante’s confusion erased his train of thought, and he was barely able to put on a half-assed poker face. CC Flynn had indeed lost the fight, but it was not because Dante asked her to take a dive. Fate had intervened, and in his eyes, Zion Momo’a emerged victorious through a fair and honest display of sheer tenacity. Yet Kato, in his own world of delusion, remained convinced otherwise.]

KATO: “You held up your end of the bargain, and we are a people loyal to our word. The project for your new venue shall receive our unwavering financial support. It has been a pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Reed. Await further details, and please, this time, answer the call.”

[With those ominous words, Kato extended his hand, a warped symbol of respect and entrapment. Dante, compelled by the circumstances that shackled him, hesitantly accepted the handshake. Kato and his entourage vanished into the murky night, leaving Dante alone, consumed by the burden of his actions. The silence was piercing and shadows weighed heavy. Dante knew that, from this point forward, he would forever be entangled in a web of darkness, unable to escape the sinister grip of the Yakuza.]
