BACKSTORY
Born in a small village in Saxony, Julia Strauss was raised in a working-class neighborhood in Dresden, Germany, in the shadow of the industrial center of the city that was still recovering from reunification. Her father was a former East German judoka, who introduced her to martial arts at a young age. Originally trained by her father and a few of his old training partners, she joined a judo club, Sportverein Elbtal 93, when she turned 12. Within a couple years, she was winning youth championships across Saxony.
Julia discovered MMA at one of these tournaments; some of the boys waiting on their matches in the tournament were watching older fights, and Julia found herself enamored with it. At age 18, on the cusp of being allowed to test for her black belt, Julia unceremoniously left SV Elbtal to try her hand at MMA–a split that fractured her relationship with both her former head coach and mentor, Erik Hanneman, as well as the club itself. So much so that one of Julia’s first professional opponents was a former training partner who began training in MMA specifically to fight Julia.
After taking 7 fights in the past 2 years, amassing a 6-1 record including a Flyweight Championship win in Leipzig-based Saxon Fighting League, Julia was signed to the Euro Fight Circuit, part of Union Grand Prix’s “Big Four” initiative.
