STORYLINE DEVELOPMENTS
There was something fitting about the first real night of Everest MMA’s new era taking place inside The Hangar, a 2,500-seat room in Costa Mesa where the intimacy makes every fight feel a little closer to the soul. This was the beginning of the championship chase, the first half of the quarterfinals, and by the time the night was over, the brackets had begun to shed some of their uncertainty. Terrence Jones, 50+ fights into a career that has already given him more miles than most, looked like a man who understood exactly what these tournaments demand. He picked apart Devon McAllister with solid boxing and grinding wrestling, never allowing the younger contender to find the fight he wanted. For Jones, the return of Everest MMA begins with another trip toward a championship. Rowan Kincaid’s road was considerably less comfortable. Tessa Calloway pushed her into the kind of fight where every minute mattered, but Kincaid’s grappling control was enough to steal two of three judges’ cards and send her into the semifinals.
Elsewhere, the tournament began producing its first real characters. Joaquin Reinoso came out like he had somewhere else to be, nearly finishing Nolan Kane in the opening round before finally breaking him down early in the second. Jaxon Holloway’s high kick ended his quarterfinal almost as quickly, giving the lightweight bracket a sudden and violent reminder of what he carries with him. Da’vion Woodard, meanwhile, turned the clock against Craig Walker, patiently assembling a three round fight before finding the finish with just 58 seconds remaining. Camila Reyes and Wes Dennis survived difficult decisions, the sort of victories that don’t necessarily make highlight reels but tend to matter when the tournament gets deeper. And then there was Samir Haddad, who submitted Cody Foxworth in the second round and quietly became one of the night’s more consequential stories. The seeds had given everyone a place in the bracket, and Orange County got the first indication of who might actually belong at the end of it.
