BACKSTORY
Notoriously mercurial for most of her life, especially in regards to hobbies and pastimes, Victoria Marshall is one of those people who can say they’ve tried a little bit of everything. Theater, school government, she dipped her toes into every sport her school offered, anything that even kinda sounded fun to her, she jumped at.
Ultimately, she settled on wrestling–her mother’s theory behind it was it posed a challenge for her. She was far from a natural at first, spending her first two years as a JV wrestler without even a sniff of a varsity match, before breaking into the team as a junior. She made the state tournament both as a junior (at 120 lbs), and as a senior (at 125), although she fell short of winning it both years.
After graduating, she started training at Mat Chess MMA, and was hooked within days. She started training her boxing, sharpened her wrestling, and earned her way to a BJJ Blue Belt, then started taking amateur fights, going 2-0 in quick succession. When Everest MMA came looking for more Strawweights to fill out their ranks, Victoria was all too happy to jump at the opportunity.
Season one…didn’t go great for her. A combined 0-3-1 under the Everest label, Victoria decided to make wholesale changes between seasons, not least of which was moving camps to Twin Cities MMA to improve her stand up fighting. When Season 2 began, she showed remarkable improvement in a relatively quick turnaround, but still ended the season only 2-2, making the title fight but losing to Eugenie Bombelles. Returning to Minneapolis ahead of season three, and the move from 115 to 125 lbs, it would be hard to justify calling a young woman with a 2-5-1 record one of the favorites–especially in the face of two undefeated prospects. Victoria quickly put a stamp on the newly created Flyweight Division, however; two dominant TKO victories over Tatiana Ruiz and Ronnie Banks, and a comfortable 3 round unanimous decision over Alexandra Hughes, led to the second final of Victoria’s Everest career–this time, the fight was initially scored a draw and sudden death was forced, after which Victoria got her hand raised and became the first Everest Flyweight Champion.
